The Facility

Since 1997, grease trap waste collected from the restaurants and food processing factories is delivered to the Interim Grease Trap Waste Treatment Facility at the West New Territories Landfill in Tuen Mun for treatment before it is disposed of at the landfill.

In 2004, the Environmental Protection Department decided to implement a permanent solution for the grease trap waste in a refuse transfer station to:
reduce the transportation distance between the sources of waste and the treatment facility;
utilize the existing infrastructural support available at an operating transfer station for the Grease Trap Waste Treatment Facility and;

facilitate the recovery of usable materials.

The West Kowloon Transfer Station was selected as the home for this new Grease Trap Waste Treatment Facility.
